Matthias Hülsmann

Matthias is an expert in the metabolism and physiology of diverse bacteria from host-associated, marine, and soil environments. He enjoys distilling insights from large datasets and consolidating literature to propose new ways to think about microbiomes. Before joining PharmaBiome, Matthias obtained his PhD in Systems Biology from ETH Zurich where he investigated how the collective metabolism of bacterial communities emerges from fundamental constraints on bacterial physiology. He has worked across all scales of biology, investigating whales, fruit trees, primates, orchids, algae and bacteria, combining lab work, data science, and literature research.
